video card install problems

CoolComputing Forum » Hardware Questions

This sounds like either a driver issue or bad hardware. What if you used your original video card? Also try removing one memory module at a time if you have multiple sticks of memory in your system.

I am using Windows 2000. By reinstalling my os will I lose anything on the hard drive? The only thing it will allow me access to is the BIOS and the safe mode menu, but if I try to select anything from the safe mode menu the machine reboots.

If you erased your hd then it would say something like operating system not found. When you change video cards you need to remove the drvers from your old video card first (use the device manager to remove) then shut down install and boot up to find new. If you can get into the safe mode uninstall from there you might try clearing your cmos also then you will have to reset your clock and date. Worse case you will have to reinstall your os and boot from the cd to reinstall. What os are you using?

I switched my setting to AGP in the BIOS, since my card is an AGP card. There are no jumpers for the on-board video. They say it will automatically recognize if there is a card present. I have tried rebooting without the card, and the same problem still exists. It almost seems like the bios is not fully recognizing my OS. I've tried safe mode and the 4 set-up disk with no success. Could I have erased my hard drive? Should I buy another motherboard? Thanks, James

Sounds like a bad problem just got worse. You were in the right place (bios) and you need to see that the onboard video is not enabled. It must be off in bios so that windows can find your card and install it. If the video card is an agp then the bios must show agp and not pci. I could not find you mb on their web site but check their manual and see if you have to move any jumpers or dip switches to disable the onboard video. If you have a pci card try a different slot. Try rebooting without the card. Let us know you progress.....good luck 8)

I recently tried to install a nvidia GeForce2 MX400 video card in a amptron pc233 motherboard with integral video. I was unsuccessful and sought advice. The advice I received was to go into the BIOS and reset it to defaults so that it would recognize my card. Upon doing so it has rendered my computer useless. My computer will boot, but when it tries to load the OS it automatically re-boots. I am about to reload the OS and start over. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, James
