Hi- I think you'll be fine with any of the mid-range CPUs out there- Athlon XP 2800+ or a Pentium 4 2.8 GHz. As for RAM you'll want 512 at least, and if you plan on doing lots of audio recording you'll want at least a 80 GB hard drive. Since you want good sound I think the Audigy 2 ZS is a good choice- it's about $125. I can definitely see this system coming in at or under budget for you. Dell is a good bet- I've never had problems w/ my Dell computers.
