Solaris 8: how to configure ethernet adapter?

CoolComputing Forum » Linux/Unix Software Questions

Oh yeah definitely it should work with your proxy server- I mean just setup Netscape to your proxy server settings and you should be fine. BTW it might be a good idea to get a router (~$100) instead so you don't have to leave your proxy machine on all the time.

The difficult part is getting a nic to work. 3Com and Intel cards are usually good bets, but there's a compatibility list over at Sun that tells you what exact cards are supported.

Thanks. That is very different from the way it is done on Windows, and I actually had to reconfigured almost everything again such as my monitor resolution. etc., (and the hard way is really hard!)

My network card seems to be incompatible with Solaris. Before I try another one, one question is that on my network, all other computers are running Windows, will this Solaris machine be able to use the proxy server on a Windows machine to access the Internet?

Thanks,

RZ

Try this link- it explains it pretty well:

During the installation of my solaris 8 on Intel PC, I chose "not networked" and skipped the IP address assignment. Now I want to enable networking, but couldn't figure out how to configure the network card for it's Ip address. This is easy with Winows OS, but I just can't figure it out on UNIX.
