Solaris 8: after install, the Front Panel is missing.

After a lot of detective work and numerous reinstallation, I got it to work right before I gave up. From its strange behavior I suspected some file corruption. So I tried custom install to see if deselecting some component might make any difference. For one install I skipped the entire second software CD, and it worked! Isn't that wierd? The second CD contains addtional software. Either there are corrupted files in my downloaded CD image, or the additional software messed up the Front Panel, which should be less likely. But anyway, I have the Front Panel now, and all the objects on the screen can be moved, too.

Thanks for the info.

Hmmm- it's odd how it took so long to load. I had it running on a K6-2 300 and it loaded pretty quickly. Maybe you need more RAM? My system had 128.

Not too sure about the panel- maybe it's hidden? Try right-clicking on the desktop and see if there's an option to re-enable it. I wiped out my Solaris system so I can't say how to get it back. You can always try reinstalling Smile . But check out this CDE tutorial first at http://www.polyu.edu.hk/~uss/faq/faq/cdeintro/cde.htm.

I downloaded Solaris 8 from SUN, and installed it to my P3 machine on a 6 G blank disk. After installation, I logged on as root and chose Common Desktop Environment. Not only it took about 3-5 minutes for the desktop to load, it also showed no Front Panel. The only thing on the screen is a CDE demo/help, and a File Manger window that shows the folders under root directory.

One more problem is that I can't drag/move any of the two windows. From the File Manager window menu I can start new terminals, but they can't be dragged around at all. The last opened terminal hides all the previous ones.

I rebooted the machine and logged on using Open Windows desktop. It seems to worked fine. I have reinstalled the system many times since then, but the problem persisted.

Could any guru enlighten me on what may be the problem with this Common Desktop Environment? Thanks.
