Go to dell`s website with the make and model number for that old pc. There you can download the drivers for both the video and audio that are compatable with your system. Each time you change operating systems you need to change the drivers and select the ones for the operating system that you are using. If you have on board sound and video it must be enabled in the bios.........

David,

I figured to just go back to 98 and forget the hassle but I find that even with 98 I still have no sound or quality video. When i go into my Display settings, it only lists two choices for colors 16 or 2 (black & white). When the system was operating properly, I had about 4 or 5 choices for color settings. I also cannot change my pixel setting from 400 x 600 in the current state. I do remember years ago when I first bought the system, I had to reformat the hard drive and had the same issue but it was under warranty and Dell talked me thru it, but I have no recall as to what they had me do. Any ideas?

Apparently XP doesn't have built-in drivers for your sound card. What is the brand? You can try going to the manufacturer's website to see if there are updated XP drivers. How is your video card listed though? Look under "Display Devices"- you must have some sort of driver installed- maybe it's the generic VGA driver.

I have a Dell Computer that was running Windows 98. I bought a new Dell that has XP on it and liked the features XP gave me so I reformatted the hard drive on the older Dell and installed XP. Everything went well but for some reason my sound and video cards are not listed in the device manager and as such, I have no sound or "action". I tried booting the driver disks that came with the older dell but nothing happens when I click "set up". Is there a way to make the cards recognizable to XP or will I have to put Win 98 back on. If so, how do I reformat from the XP system.
