Good job Kimobear. Well it's difficult for Antivirus software to be able to find the newest virus if you're not connected to the Internet. Maybe what they can do instead is to set up the router so that it doesn't allow Port 80 access from the computer, but the the Antivirus software should still be able to download updates via FTP. Or a basic trick to to setup a bogus proxy server for the browser and anyone who doesn't have that much computer knowledge can open the browser and it won't go anywhere.

Update. This was a win xp setup. I removed the hard drive and placed it in a usb external case. Scanned the hard drive and found the virus and removed it. Then after re-installing the hard drive into the original computer I inserted the win xp setup disk and ran the repair option. In a few seconds the process was done. The band computer works fine now and I have scolded the band members to not use flash drives etc that is not scanned. They still do not want the band computer to go on the internet. I think that AVG lets you dowload updates and transfer them to a computer that is not on the net. Have you heard about that or another program that will work?

Hi Kimobear- what version of Windows are you using? Have you tried running the malicious software removal tool from Microsoft?

I personally never used or had to use a registry cleaner before. If possible a clean install might be the best option. If you choose to do that, make sure you install antivirus (AVG and Microsoft have free ones) with anti-spyware first before restoring backup data. You have to have antivirus w/ antispyware simply because of what happened- a USB drive or SD card w/ infected files can still infect a computer that's not connected to the Net.

My brother and his friends have a computer I set up for them to use for their band and music recording. Recently they had a windows (Hal.dll) error. I was wondering if there is a good windows registry software that I could use to help protect their computer. The computer does not go on the internet and has no anti-virus. I did see a virus when I scanned their computer two weeks ago. It happened when a band member used a usb flash drive. The virus was: downloader.swizzor. I told them if it is a stand alone computer with no anti-virus protection then only use cd's or dvd's to extract their music, that way the band computer will not get infected.

Windows over time messes up the registry and stuff. I was wondering if Ccleaner would work or something like that to help keep the computer running.
