Gmail App vs iOS Mail: Google Wants You to Use Gmail App over Mail App in iOS

Posted by: david on Friday/September 15/2017 - 05:21 PM
Internet

I've enjoyed using the built-in iOS mail app for both the iPhone and the iPad. I used to prefer the Gmail app but found the iOS mail app to be better all-in-one place for all my email accounts, including non-google accounts. Some of the advantages IMO of Apple's iOS Mail app include:

  • VIP inbox which lets you see all the emails for designated "VIP" senders in one place. This syncs across to to the Mail app on MacOS computers as well.

  • Pretty amazing feature that lets me annotate/sign a PDF document and send back

  • Better....

Time Warner Cable Slow Down Vs. Advertised Speeds

Internet

I've had Time Warner Cable for broadband Internet Access for years now. About 3 years ago I got my own cable modem in the form of the Motorola 6141 Surfboard so to remove the monthly lease charge that Time Warner accesses. BTW Motorola sold its cable modem business to ARRIS, so the ARRIS 6141 is pretty much the same model. And for about 3 years now I have Time Warner's "Extreme"/"Ultimate" Internet which is supposed to give 100 Mbps downloads. It was working nicely, but starting at around 8 months ago, I started to have problem....

Bing Rewards Redemption Pricing Discrepancies for Different Accounts

Internet

Bing Rewards is pretty nice way to earn small prizes (or chances to win big awards) while doing what you would normally do anyways on a daily basis- use an Internet search engine. Since Google is so dominant, Microsoft has had to resort to the Bing Rewards system to entice users to use Bing more. The strategy has worked, at least for me- I've set Bing as the default search engine on all the browsers I use. I even set the Bing Dashboard as one of default/home pages when I launch Firefox, to....

WinDNSDynamic.exe from DNSdynamic.org Spyware?

Posted by: david on Wednesday/October 09/2013 - 06:31 PM
Internet
Recently I signed up with DNSdynamic.org which offers a free dynamic DNS service. I then downloaded and installed WinDNSDynamic.exe. Ran Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and immediately saw Windows message saying WinDNSDynamic.exe crashed. Uh oh- I thought. After the scan completed, Malwarebytes showed that the executable contains Spyware.Password.

I then tried to go back to DNSDynamic.org and Malwarebytes blocks it- I get the "Unable to connect" message in Firefox. I took a look in the Anti-Malware log and it shows:
Memory Processes Detected: 1

F:\apps\WinDNSdynamic.exe (Spyware.Password) -> 7464 -> Delete on reboot.

Scary stuff....

Articles: Time Warner Cablecard Self Installation Now Available

Internet
In a previous article I was trying to get the Ceton InfiniTV to work with the cablecard I pulled from my Tivo HD. Basically Time Warner customer service couldn't do it over the phone and sent someone out. The interesting thing is that the tech who came over who I thought was supposedly was going to fix the problem with the cablecard claimed that he doesn't do installs and that I wasn't supposed to "move equipment". I was not allowed to take the cablecard from my Tivo and plug it into the InfiniTV. ....

For those of you who travel in and out of the Austin airport (Austin-Bergstrom International Airport) you will be happy to hear that starting today, 5-23-2011, you can get 30 minutes of free wi-fi wireless internet access on your laptop/phone. The service is provided by the current broadband wireless company for the airport in Boingo Wireless. Note that the half hour of free internet is for a single, continuous session. So if you disconnect after 5 minutes and try to connect again you won't be eligible for more free internet minutes, at least for another....

Skype to Use GotoMeeting Technology

Posted by: david on Tuesday/March 01/2011 - 03:21 PM
Internet
Skype today entered into an agreement with Citrix to use technologies from GotoMeeting in Skype. This is an effort by Skype to help further its efforts in business web conferencing and online collaboration. No word yet on the name of the new Skype product- maybe Skype Business? It also won't be available until the end of 2011. Pricing has also not yet been revealed, though our guess is that it will probably be on par with the GotoMeeting's monthly subscription fee.

Google Public DNS Unveiled

Internet
Google today introduced their own free public DNS service called "Google Public DNS". This service is similar to the ones offered by OpenDNS. The Google Public DNS IP addresses for the primary and secondary DNS servers are very easy to remember:

8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

Personally I don't like how OpenDNS redirects when I search in a non-existant domain, so I will be giving GPD a try for sure- thanks Google!

[excerpt] Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz has halted a Pentagon project that would have allowed military personnel, including troops deployed overseas, to vote via the Internet in the November presidential election.

[excerpt] Some of the charges are fallout from what investigators say were faked demonstrations of the company's technology for investors in which digital video sent to a set-top box was not beamed from 12 miles away, as advertised, but was transmitted via a wireless local area network link hidden in a ceiling above the receiver.

Music download service Napster has decided to charge a membership subscription fee of around $5 a month, with services remaining basically the same as they have been, according to comments made by new Napster CEO Konrad Hilbers in a German magazine interview.

In a brief interview published in the German weekly Stern, Hilbers also reacted strongly when the interviewer described Napster as "practically dead." Hilbers responded: "Napster is not dead. The name (Napster) is very valuable, and we are working at top speed to create a workable business."
